PICTURES ON SILENCE BIOGRAPHY

Pictures on Silence, a harp and saxophone chamber duo, explores the diverse musical possibilities of their instrumental combination through compelling programming and a dedication to excellence in performance. The ensemble has an ever-expanding repertoire driven by commissioning new works, exploration of repertoire written throughout the twentieth century and the adaptation of existing music. Harpist Jacqueline Pollauf and saxophonist Dr. Noah Getz each bring a wealth of interpretive experience to the duo, having performed extensively as chamber musicians and soloists throughout the United States. The ensemble works to further the perception and abilities of their instruments through concertizing and educational initiatives. During the 2009-2010 season, the duo will be the Ensemble-in-Residence for a the Baltimore Composer's Forum and will premiere works by a number of composers including Armando Bayolo, Ying-Chen Kao, Miklòs Maros and David Smooke. The name of the duo is taken from a quote by Leopold Stokowski, “Musicians paint their pictures on silence.”

American harpist Jacqueline Pollauf is a dynamic young performer with musical sensitivity and maturity beyond her years. Praised for playing with “glittering beauty” (Lawrence Budman, critic for the Miami Herald) and a “steady and most satisfying elegance” (The Toledo Blade), Ms. Pollauf made her solo debut at age sixteen with the Perrysburg Symphony Orchestra. She performs frequently as a soloist and her debut solo album, Bouquet, will be released in 2009. Ms. Pollauf is on the faculties of the University of Maryland Baltimore County and the Baltimore School for the Arts. She is a graduate of the Peabody Conservatory where she studied with Ruth K. Inglefield.

Dr. Noah Getz made his Carnegie Hall debut as the recipient of the National Alliance for Excellence Grand Prize. He has presented solo recitals for The Phillips Collection, the Dame Myra Hess Series, World Saxophone Congress XIII, MOSA Concert Series Saxophone Summit and performed the debut of Fernando Benadon's Hidden Charges with the Empyrean Ensemble. Dr. Getz received a first-round Grammy nomination for his contribution with the New Hudson Saxophone Quartet to America's Millennium Tribute to Adolphe Sax, Vol. V, and has a solo album, Crosscurrents, on the Albany label. He has presented masterclasses at UC-Berkeley, UC-Davis, Florida State University and the Conservatory of Puerto Rico. Dr. Getz is a Musician-In-Residence at American University in Washington, DC. As Artist-in-Residence for the David Oppenheim Residency program, Dr. Getz collaborated with David Amram and presented recitals on the Harold Clurman Concert Series.
